A Banyan Bonsai tree is a species of Fig or ficus.
'Banyan' sounds like a wierd name doesn't it? Well, it comes from British trading history around the 15-1600's where writers would talk of Banyan trees where Indian traders would set up shop underneath. Indian/Hindu traders were called Banias and would trade underneath these trees as they provided great shade! Eventually the name became Banyan!
Feel in the mood for some interesting facts? We do!!

Wow!
Ok, so now lets get onto the good stuff, but, before you do make sure you have familiarised yourself with our How To Guides our Bonsai Care Guides and our Beginner's Guide!!

We just wanna help.........

Soil, Lighting & Watering
• The best advice we can give with the Banyan is to remember it is used to living in rainforests! Rainforests are humid and many smaller trees recieve a little sunlight through the canopy and misty rain. Normal household conditions usually stay quite warm and humid so this usually suffices for Banyans. However, try to maintain this!
• Use a basic Bonsai soil mix with good drainage. Use grit!
• The Banyan is a tropical and sub-tropical species that requires sunlight, but likes to live indoors. In fact..... It has to live indoors! You can 'let it out from time to time during spring and summer, but not for long periods of time!
• Set up your Banyan near a window and rotate it throughout the day or week so it can find sunlight on every inch!
• Water your Banyan daily throughout the year. Water it by misting with a misting bottle - Just like in a rainforest! If you cannot water it for a couple of days and cannot get a neighbour to, place the pot in a tray with about 1cm of water for it to uptake slowly
• Ensure your soil has adequate drainage but do not allow it to dry out. either extreme will kill it

Feeding
• Feed your Banyan through the growing season (Spring)
• Use a low-nitrogen feed

Repotting
• Repot your Banyan Bonsai tree every 2 years
• Trim off a third of it's roots
• Watch for root-rot root rot!

Pruning & Wiring
• The Banyan Bonsai tree is generally slow growing and can be pruned easily at the start of Spring and then throughout Summer
• Prune back as much growth as you like. With Banyans there is no rule of thumb, it rests purely on your vision!
• If you want yours to look like the one in the photo above, ensure you prune all growth in early Spring and ensure the branches are all evenly spaced and of similar length. Remember, Bonsai is about symmetry and blatant asymmetry!
